New PhD/MSc Scholarship Available
Work on research and gain experience of helping undergrads to learn.
We are seeking applications for new PhD/MSc scholarship, associated with the Computing Drop In Support Centre, Computer DISC, at NUI Galway.
This scholarship will cover up to 3 years’ of research in any topic in Information Technology. Before applying, you must identify a potential research supervisor and a research topic; these details must be specified in your covering letter.
The scholarship is associated with the Computing Drop In Support Centre (Computer DISC) at NUI Galway. The successful applicant will have to contribute approximately 10 hours/week of tutoring to DISC, during the 24 weeks of term, and in return will be awarded a research fellowship of €10,000 plus fees per year.
Fellowships are renewable annually for up to three years, subject to satisfactory performance in the Centre and the research. These tutors do not have to contribute a further 5 hours to lab and tutorial work, as other postgraduate students do; their teaching contribution is entirely in the DISC.

For example, if you would like to work in the Data Mining & Machine Learning Group, please contact me (Michael Madden). My DM&ML Group conducts research in:
- • Artificial Intelligence (A.I.)
- • Machine Learning algorithms, including Rule Learners, Neural Networks, Support Vector Machines and Probabilistic approaches
- • Time series data mining
- • New algorithms for classification
- • Probabilistic methods for handling uncertainty
- • Applications in medical informatics, science, and engineering.
Applications must demonstrate:
- • A broad and deep knowledge of programming and relevant computing technologies
- • An excellent ability to communicate, mentor students, and help them learn
- • A research topic area and the agreement of a named supervisor to supervise the applicant’s research, if the fellowship is awarded
- • Eligibility to start an MSc/PhD by research, including having a H1 or H2:1 in a relevant degree
Candidates will be shortlisted and may be called for interview. The final selection will be based on the candidates’ abilities and the need to have a diverse skill-set among the Centre’s tutors.
